Lower Courtyard
Immediately accessible from the conference room on the 1st Floor at 61st Street, the Lower Courtyard in Mellon’s garden provides staff with an inconspicuous point of entry to experience our special outdoor space. It also gives a first impression of the garden’s signature bluestone paving. Dense, durable, and easily split into slabs, bluestone was once ubiquitous underfoot in New York. In the mid-19th century, the stone was quarried in New York’s upstate “bluestone belt” towns such as Saugerties and Kingston, and sent down the Hudson by barge to pave sidewalks and construct the rapidly growing metropolis.
From this vantage point, garden goers can view the nearby Allspice Garden or access stairs to the newly constituted Event Plaza. Through the acquisition of the townhouse at 146 East 62nd Street in 2020 and its related outdoor space, the Lower Courtyard has been more fully integrated with the rest of the garden. Then and now, it is a space preferred by staff seeking shade, quiet work, or contemplation.
